AIR JORDAN - 2009

AIR JORDAN - 2009

Let’s start off with a little history. The very first Air Jordan was released by Nike in 1985 in a black, white and red color way and was the first ever signature shoe worn by any NBA player. By today’s standards this shoe was rather rudimentary in design and on-court functionality but it is important to note that the 1985 Air Jordan 1 was the first shoe to incorporate the Nike patented air cushioning system which was ground breaking at that time. Also, the Air Jordan 1 marked a very important start to what would soon become one the most influential signature shoe lines of all time and would be the standard for all to follow.

Since 1985, a signature Air Jordan shoe has been released each year (typically in February) with a moniker related to the number of shoe, Air Jordan 1, Air Jordan 2, Air Jordan 3, and so on. This numbering system is important because last year the Air Jordan 23 was released and rumors started spreading that this was going to be the last of the actual signature Air Jordan’s because it was the 23rd edition. Because the number 23 was Michael’s signature NBA jersey number, some shoe collectors thought it was going to be a fitting way to end the signature line of Air Jordan’s. Thankfully they were wrong! In February, the 2009 signature Air Jordan’s were released to the relief of Jordan shoe collectors everywhere. However, this year marked the first year the signature Air Jordan’s are to be named with the year they are introduced and not by the familiar number in the series.

Michael Jordan, with the help of Jordan Brand senior shoe designer, Jason Mayden have come up with yet another inspiring collaboration of performance and modern design. Every signature line of Air Jordan’s is usually inspired by a wide range of materials and objects not normally associated with shoes. Cars, airplanes, suit fabrics, innovative technology and even Jordan’s personal basketball achievements have all been used in the various designs. The 2009 editions are no exception as they utilize an innovative technology called APT, Articulated Propulsion Technology. This carbon fiber technology is normally associated to prosthetic running limbs used by handicapped athletes. The APT in the 2009 Air Jordan’s is designed and integrated in the shoe to help boost and support an athlete’s quick forward movements on the court.

While on-court performance is always the primary focus, the styling of every signature Air Jordan is just as paramount. The 2009 signature Air Jordan has a very modern and almost classy feel this is reminiscent of Jordan 11. The sides and heel of the shoe are draped with silk-like pleats that draw your eye towards the middle portion that boast a diamond shaped hologram surrounded by glossy black leather. This glossy black leather is also found on the tong of the shoe which also encompasses the ever popular “jumpman” symbol. The midsole portion of the 2009 Air Jordan is particularly unique as it is formed with a plastic urethane that is injected into the shoe creating a gray marble-like appearance. This brings us to the bottom of the shoe which has a split heel design that allows for greater mobility and control on the court.

Altogether the design and engineering of this signature Air Jordan combines basketball performance with the elegance and style that only Jordan Brand can deliver. I for one am extremely happy with the new 2009 Air Jordan and I am excited to see that the legend of Air Jordan still lives on through his shoes! Check them out today at Jumpman23.com, Nike.com, Eastbay.com, or if you are lucky, you might still be able to find them at your local FinishLine or Foot Locker.
