Firefly - Sweet Tea Vodka

Firefly - Sweet Tea Vodka

Summer is now in full swing, and with summer comes occasion for poolside barbecues, evenings on the patio and other such outdoorsy get-togethers. Typically, alcoholic beverages are a staple for such activities providing the social lubricant for anyone above twenty-one years of age. The most common summertime beverages consumed are Mojitos, Daiquiris and Margaritas due to the cold and refreshing nature of the cocktails. For those who do not imbibe alcoholic beverages regularly, there will be little argument to the delight of a nice tall glass of iced tea, especially amongst those people raised in the southernmost states. Firefly Distillery, the only distillery in South Carolina, has developed an alcoholic version of this southern comfort drink… Sweet Tea Vodka. At first the unorthodox combination seems off-putting - vodka and tea don’t seem to be the most natural taste combination - but the intrigue is attracting consumers across the country.  The mass appeal has proved overwhelming to bar owners and retailers alike, finding it difficult to keep up with the heightened demand from customers.  In an attempt to satiate this demand the small, privately owned distillery is now distributing their Sweet Tea Vodka to almost every state in the country.

Firefly began as the collaboration of Jim Irvin and Scott Newitt, who initiated their partnership in 2003. Originally the two patented a muscadine wine-based vodka, but quickly realized their idea for sweet tea-infused vodka was a golden opportunity. Irvin and Newitt refer to the libation as “vodka with a southern accent” and according to their website the sweet tea vodka is distilled four times and blended with pure Louisiana sugar cane. In order to preserve the sweetness of the alcohol, the vodka is produced at 70 proof (or 35% alcohol by volume), which is standard for most flavored vodkas. Served on the rocks with a lemon or with a splash of water, this cocktail does not need much dressing up. Quickly sweeping the nation, Firefly had to enlist distribution assistance from Louisiana based Sazerac Co. to help keep up with escalating demand. Continuing to grow, Firefly has recently introduced four new flavors: raspberry tea, peach tea, mint tea and lemon tea vodkas.

Whether you are a true Southerner or just looking for a taste of the South, look no further. Firefly Sweet Tea Vodka puts a fun twist on a southern classic that you must try. Ask your local bartender for one on your next patio excursion and delight in this wonderful liquid refreshment. As always, please drink responsibly.

Sounds crazy but this stuff really is pretty good. But beware - your buzz will creep up fast as you find the bottom of your glass much faster than anticipated.

Here in Dallas it is available at every major liquor store, and most (if not all) bars should be carrying it at this point. I assume the same is true in cities nationwide. They would be crazy to not carry it!

I love Fred’s! The Diablo Burger is hard to beat, and I bet this was a great complement to the meal.

Excellent post for an excellent drink. I love it but I’ve run into a few people lately who say “This stuff tastes horrible!” Yes it can, if made incorrectly. You have to remember this is supposed to be a light and refreshing drink. Many people I run into are pouring themselves 3-5 fingers of this cocktail. In order for this drink to be truly enjoyed you need to cut back on the amount you are pouring and add more water and even lemon if you like. Your body will thank you later for the extra H20 and the drinks will go down nice and smooth. Enjoy.
